CMC Wild Plant School-Sign up Today!

 WILD PLANT SCHOOL

This is a unique opportunity to meet others who share a love of Colorado’s flora while gaining tools to identify plants your hikes.  You will also receive resources to learn more on your own. Note: the field sessions are not typical CMC hikes. These sessions will exercise your brains more than your legs – each field class will be less than 2 miles round trip. Some days are less than one mile!

The classes will help you identify and understand the wildflowers, shrubs, and trees in three Colorado life zones through a variety of teaching methods. All evening lectures take place from 7-9 pm at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street, Golden, CO 80401.

The school consists of three courses.  Each course will focus on the plants in a different life zone during a field day and an evening lecture. Approximately 30-40 plants will be featured per course, with opportunity to gain a depth of knowledge about interesting ecological relationships, human uses, family characteristics, and how to identify the species using key characteristics and a simple key.  The evening lecture for each life zone includes a preview of some of the plants you will see in the field as well as an introduction to basic botany vocabulary. You will have an opportunity to examine and dissect flower and leaf components, learn the basic arrangements.
